The global human and economic costs caused by bacterial biofilms are enormous, from healthcare through to the agrochemical and petroleum industries. When bacteria settle and begin to colonise surfaces they communicate with each other. By releasing signaling molecules in a process called quorum sensing, they can coordinate the generation of toxins and the creation of biofilms, in order to defend themselves.

Quiescence Technologies is commercializing novel quorum sensing blocker (QSB) technology which affects this signaling and has led to the identification of substances which inhibit bacterial colonization and biofilm development. This breakthrough technology offers means of preventing the consequences of bacterial infection whilst avoiding the development of resistance and toxicity, and, in addition, opening completely new application opportunities.
